Complete prior to game day:

  • Contact Public Safety as soon as you know when you want to do the event to make sure they know it will be going on and to make sure it is ok with them. You can contact them by stopping by their office or calling them at 515-3000.
  • Reserve the brickyard as soon as you can for this time slot (this seems kind of silly because I doubt anything else would be going on at this time of night, but you never know). In the past, we have reserved it from 10pm - 12am.
  • Begin announcing the event two weeks prior to game day (mention game day, start time and place to meet). Ed should be contacted about the event going in the announcement section of the bulletin. Another good way to advertise the event is to make a flyer for it and put the flyer in the bulletin.
  • Decide out of bounds and boundaries for both sides as well as where the neutral zone is located. Make maps detailing the boundaries. Black and white maps of campus (which can easily be marked for boundaries) can be found at the information desk in the first floor of Talley.
  • Ask two people to be flag placement judges - one for each team to go with the people who hide the flag. The judges' responsibility is to make sure the flag is not hidden in such a way that it is practically impossible to find. The flag must be able to be found. It must be visible and retrievable.
  • Ask someone who is full of energy and enthusiasm and has a loud voice to pull everyone together on game day and give announcements and go over rules.
  • Make sure the following items are being brought by someone:
    • Maps that outline the boundaries and neutral zone - ideally one map for each person; so maybe around 50 maps
    • Air horn to start and end game
    • Flags (in the past, we have used road cones with colored tape around each one to set them apart from other road cones)
    • Two (or more) coolers with water or some other drink
    • Cups
    • Markers or tape to differentiate teams

Do at the event:

  • Set up coolers in the neutral zone.
  • Set up cones signifying the boundaries for the neutral zone.
  • If using cones for the flags, put tape around them signifying they are the cones we are using and not some random cone that was already out there.
  • Announce the following rules before play begins:
    • You cannot guard the flag or the jail.
    • If you are in jail and you get tagged out, you must go back to the neutral zone before you can start looking for the flag again. You have safe passage back to the neutral zone.
    • If you tag someone in jail, then you don't have to go back to your side and you don't have safe passage. You are still free to look for the flag or tag others who are in jail.
    • You can tag multiple people in jail.
    • If you tag someone in your area, you must escort them to your jail.
    • Tell everyone that public safety has been informed that we will be out here. So if anyone gets stopped by them, they can say they are with Grace Christian Life playing capture the flag.
  • Divide up into teams.

Wisdom gained from previously organizing capture the flag:

  • Set the initial meeting location to be in the neutral zone.
  • To help differentiate teams, in the past we have had one team wear two pieces of green tape tied to each of their arms and the other team wear a single piece of red tape wrapped over one shoulder and around their chest.
  • To divide up into teams, we have gotten everyone to line up in a straight line and counted off one-two-one-two.
