The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace, not by any work we do to earn God's favor. Now that we have fallen, we cannot earn our way to Heaven by good behavior. We must receive the gift of eternal life through Jesus' work on the cross and the resurrection. Now when true salvation occurs the evidence of a new life should be obvious. There should be some proof of a new life in Jesus Christ.

Sin is lawlessness, or coming up with your own law and standards. It is having a different spirit than what God wants us to have concerning Him and His commandments. Since the laws we make for ourselves are not identical to God's, we break His commandments.
